Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the Monsoon Palace or Sajjangarh Palace that overlooks the Udaipur city. It is situated five kilometers from the Sajjangarh palace or Monsoon palace. The wildlife sanctuary is rich in flora and fauna and has been made a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1987 by Government of India. In ancient times, it served as the hunting ground for the Kings of Mewar Dynasty.
The sanctuary is home to many animals like wild boars, sambars, hyenas, chitals, jackals, blue bulls, panthers, hares, etc. Many animals were also reintroduced in the wildlife so that they can be viewed in close quarters. The wildlife sanctuary is also home to several species of birds and reptile. The wall of the sanctuary was extended and today the entire hillock is fenced thereby the vegetal cover of the area has been protected.
From the Sajjangarh Palace, the tourists can have a spectacular view of the lakes in Udaipur as well as the Bansdara hill (part of Aravalli hill ranges). Bansdara Hill also provides backdrop for the wildlife sanctuary and the breathtaking view of sunset as well as sunrise should not be missed by the tourists to the city. The wildlife sanctuary is also an ideal place for those who seek adventure. The roads are also laid in the sanctuary which makes it easier to reach different parts of the Safari Park.
The sanctuary is also supported by the tiger lake which is also called as Jiyan Lake or Bari Lake. This is an artificial lake that was constructed by Maharaja Raj Singh during his reign in Mewar in the year 1664. He named the lake in memory of his mother Jana Devi. The lake comes with a total area of 1.25 square miles and has a water storage capacity of 400 million cubic feet.
There is a small hill that resembles a fish is situated in proximity to the wildlife sanctuary. This small fish shaped hill is called as Machla Magra. This hill is also home to a wide variety of birds and animals. The western region of the Bansdara hill is the Jhar water hole flourishes Mahua trees. From this place, the visitors can enjoy the micro climate of the region which is created by the forests that surrounds the place. In rainy season, the springs that flow through this area adds beauty to the place. A temple in honour of Lord Shiva is situated near the water hole.
