Rajsamand Lake

The town of Rajsamand is adorned with the precious lakes of Rajasamand, one of the 4 lakes due to which Udaipur is known as the city of lakes. Built by Maharana Raj Singh in 1660, the town and the lake got its name from him. The origin of this lake is River Gomti and it is flanked by a glorious dam built in the 17th century.It is located 66 km in north of Udaipur and lies between Rajnagar and kankroli.

History of Rajsamand Lake

Rajsamand, a town in Rajasthan had to attend to the needs of water requirement. The lake was a result of the dam constructed across Gomti, Kelwa and Tali rivers. The reason for this construction was to provide employment for the victims of a widespread drought and famine and to provide canal irrigation for agricultural purpose.The first stone laid for its foundation was on April 17, 1665 and the construction started in January 1676. Rajsamand lake has also been the seaplane base of Imperial airways during world war II.

Features of Rajsamand Lake

As per the statistics, the length of the lake goes up to 6km and 2.5 km in width and a depth of 18 m. The lake features a stone embankment on the southern end which is the Kankroli end. The embankment is done with terraces of large marbles, stone ghats leading down to the water's edge. Princess Charumati, from one of the Sisodias family in gratitude to Maharana Raj Singh I married him to prevent her marriage to Aurangzeb, later she commissioned the ornamental arches and pavilions along the embankment. The five arches seen here are where the Tuladan ceremony was done for the financing of temples and tanks for the common people.The lake embankment also has 3 domicile nine pavilions known as 'Nauchowki' which are carved and festooned with pictures of sun, chariots, gods and birds.The most special feature is the Sanskrit inscription stone on 27 white marble blocks.

How to Reach Rajsamand Lake

Rajsamand lake is 66 km from Udaipur and approximately 59 km from Udaipur's railway station.The nearest railway station is at Kankroli also. Direct trains are available from Marwar junction and Mavli Junction. The nearest airport is Dabok Airport in Udaipur.

A little offset from the city of Udaipur, luxurious hotels are available in the city. But the surrounding cities Kankroli and Rajnagar have some dharamshalas and rest houses available at a considerable rate. Some of the hotels are as follows:

When to Visit

The spectacular lake is worth a visit specially at the time from October to March.

Sunset at Rajsamand Lake

The sunset here is breathtaking with the water of the lake glittering with the startling light of the sun. The sun kissed shades with oranges and browns are worth to cherish with either a calm walk down the embankments or boating amidst the waters. Kumbalgarh fort, kankroli (city) are also worth a visit for their temples and shrines.
