Economy of Udaipur

Udaipur’s economy has improved over the years and is likely to augment further in the times to come. Major contributors to the economy of Udaipur are tourism and agriculture. The city is also famous for manufacturing beautiful handicraft items that are supplied to various parts of the country and even abroad. Besides, Udaipur houses a number of small and big industries including gems, jewelry, zinc, metals, minerals and marbles that have helped in boosting its economy.

Udaipur encompasses beautiful edifices such as Jag Mandir Palace, Lake Palace, City Palace, Chittorgarh Fort, Bagore ki Haveli and Ghanerao Castle that attract a large number of tourists not only from India but also from various parts of the world. The number of tourists has increased over the years because of which the city has benefited to a great extent. Since tourists of almost all segments visit the city, it encompasses different kinds of hotels to suit the budget of different people. Though the best time to visit Udaipur is between September and March, it is flooded by the tourists almost all round the year. No wonder, tourism contributes a great deal to the city’s economy. The Taj hotel and resorts, Trident group of hotels and Oberoi group of hotels are amongst the best hotels in the city and fetch a huge business from the high class and corporate travelers.

Now, the tourists who visit the place do not just benefit the hospitality industry but various other industries as well. As mentioned above, the handicraft items sold in Udaipur have been recognized worldwide and the main reason for this is the city’s tourism. Similarly, the textile industry, jewelry industry as well as the food industry of Udaipur also fetches good business because of its tourism.

Agriculture of Udaipur

Udaipur is also rich agriculturally. A number of crops are grown in the city and supplied to various parts of the country to bring in business. The principal crops grown here are Wheat, Barley, Jowar, Gram, Maize, Pulses and Ground Nuts. A number of vegetables, fruits and spices are also grown here and supplied across the country. Cash crops such as cotton and tobacco also fetch good business for Udaipur. All these crops are grown in abundance. Thus besides contributing immensely towards the overall economy of the state, the agricultural activities here also provide employment to a good number of people thereby ensuring the economic prosperity of the inhabitants.

While crops such as Jowar, Maize, Bajra, Ground Nuts, Pulses and Sugarcane are sown during June and July and harvested around autumn that is in September and October, crops like gram, barley, wheat and oil seeds are sown in October-November and harvested around the spring season that is in March-April.

Rajasthan government has been working on improving Udaipur’s infrastructure and is also taking various steps to ascertain its economic and social growth. It has thus come up with quite a few investment friendly policies and is also encouraging industrial development in the city. Udaipur is slowly treading on the lines of Jaipur and emerging as a good option for investors and start up businesses. Looking at the current trend it seems like Udaipur’s economy would increase manifolds a few years down the line.
